Trigger Point Injections

Effective medicinal treatment in itself and, at times, in conjunction with physical therapy can prove to be all the treatment that may be required but, at times, due to the severity of pain, more may be needed and there are options for relief of discomfort.

An effective treatment option is trigger point injections which provide an easily performed procedure which is safe and provides prompt relief of symptoms of discomfort. Keep in mind, not all trigger points require injections. However, after a full evaluation of the history of pain our physicians may conclude this to be the best course of action to undertake.

Trigger point injections treat painful area of muscle which contain trigger points or knots of muscle which form when muscles do not relax. At times, these knots are felt under the skin and these trigger points oftentimes irritate the surrounding nerves and cause a pain felt in another part of the body. During the procedure, our healthcare physicians insert a small needle into the trigger point. The injection contains a local anesthetic or saline and may include a corticosteroid. The trigger point is made inactive and pain is alleviated. Sustained relief is gained by a brief course of treatment and the procedure takes only a few minutes.

Joint Aspirations

Joint aspirations, which entail removal of fluid from a joint is another procedure our specialist are proficient in administering. The joint is entered with a needle attached to a syringe then fluid is aspirated and used for lab testing or medication can be injected into the point space. Joint swelling and slight pain several hours after treatment is an uncommon complication but, should this occur, it usually subsides within several days.

Sacroiliac Joint Injections

The key purpose of sacroiliac joint injection is used as a diagnostic tool to locate the source of pain and provide therapeutic relief of pain. Sacroiliac joint injection confirms joint dysfunction by administering the joint with a local anesthetic, injecting that joint with the final result being a large percentage of pain relief is attained. Usually, a second diagnostic injection is performed to reaffirm the diagnosis.

As with any medical treatment plan, a full evaluation of the patient's medical history, assessment of the pain location and severity and comprehensive physical examination are of paramount importance prior to any procedure.
